Reading Notes: Voyages of Sinbad B

The second half of the Sinbad adaptation was pretty consistent with the first. There were a lot of exhausted themes, but I noticed a much bigger element of object involvement. That is, for some reason, the second half seemed to include a significantly higher amount of object descriptions and plot involvement than in the first half. I remember that in the first half, for instance, during the entire first and second voyage, Sinbad merely is described as having "merchandise." In the second part, the narration describes objects much more deeply. In fact, the second half seemed to involve a much higher level of descriptions in general. This included depictions of the characters and locations as well. What I took away from the reading is that you can vary the number of involved devices from story to story. In one narrative, you do not need to stick to a certain level of narrative versus descriptions. As the story develops, so too can the ratio of textual devices. (Sinbad's...

Reading Notes: Romans

Paul I read Paul's Letter to the Romans today, exploring what sort of message he was trying to convey to the city's people. This is one of those times when understanding the context was crucial to get the most out of reading. Paul was in the midst of experiencing a faction in the early days of the church. This all surrounded the "Gentile question," which asked how closely a gentile Christian needed to follow Jewish law. Letter to the Romans is set up in a brilliant argument where Paul makes the case that you can be a Christian without being Jewish. What impressed me most was his appeal to Abraham. The ancestor of the Jewish people, Abraham is definitely considered a righteous man. However, everything that he did was outside of the law. That is, his righteousness was granted to him by God for reasons other than whether or not he kept Kosher or was circumcised. Story Lab: EmpoWord

This week I opted to do the story lab. I think my final addition to the story/portfolio will be the third section of my Asus and Ligh story . For the lab I read through the second chapter of EmpoWord. The resource was a great learning experience and seemed to be put together by a group of minds that are fluent in both writing and education. The chapter reads like it is designed to be in a textbook, but one that has a personal tone and is aimed at young authors. It defined some well-known terms like epiphany and dialogue, but also went into detail about things like the difference between narrative scope and narrative sequence. Out of all of the resources that I have found out about through this course, this online "textbook" is one that I know I will revisit. I thought that the exercises at the end of the sections could be useful, but were a bit inauthentic for me.
