Week 13 Story: Asus and More Ligh

Image
[continued from last week ] Teacher and Pupil After this interaction, Ligh and Asus became inseparable. Asus was thrilled to share her tricks to a mentee, something that was surprising to Ligh and those who were familiar with the arrangement. Whenever Asus was not performing, she was speaking with a  deliberate voice in hushed conversations with Ligh. As the worldwide tour continued, the two could be seen together at all hours of the day, crouching at the stone-working table and speaking in hushed voices. By the end of the journey, Ligh had become a master at performing all but one of Asus' tricks. The one that remained in need of work and continued studies was Asus' famous ability to turn gold into lead. The other abilities, from works of true alchemy to basic skills surrounding sleight of hand, had all become second nature to the young apprentice. Unfortunately for Ligh, Asus' mastery of this one final skill would leave room for only one true Master of Golden Lead. ...

Week 7 Story

Image
Lighting. Link .  A long time ago there was a charitable leader who wished for his great people to experience an abundance of health and safety. He and his family worked tirelessly to help their community and would go to great lengths to see it succeed. Often, this work was thankless and after a while, some of his family grew weary of it. When two of his sons left the community, the leader was left with his daughters, wives, and youngest son. In the time that followed, this group of dedicated public servants would work harder and longer than ever before. The slack was picked up and the community went on, though the leader's family found themselves even more tired than before. During this period, a great drought began in a neighboring village. The townspeople worried that this would spread and lead to famine, so they began to wonder what could be done to bring back the rain. They prayed and prayed, but no solutions could be agreed upon. Soon the leader gave the idea of digg...

Week 5 Story: Tragedy at Sea

Image
A Tragedy at Sea  It was around my sixth month at sea that I began this new leg of my troublesome expedition. There was a week of storms, with our ship in a constant state of being beaten and ravaged by the swells. None of my crew made it through that week without becoming terribly ill, even though we were a band of ocean-hardened merchants. However, by the end of that week, the least of the men's worries were that of seasickness. On the seventh night, right after we had finished supper below the deck, I heard an excruciating crack. It seemed like thunder surrounded us as a lightning bolt struck the stern of the ship. Unfortunately, the reality was much worse. I immediately began to feel my whole body shiver as the ship twisted around me. Four of the five crewmembers in the galley were dispatched to the bow to investigate the damage, as surely this snap was a sign of the boat's hull splintering. Darius, my first mate, ran up the galley stairs to disengage th...

Week 3 Story: The Fisherman with One Hand

Image
Fishing Along the Shore. Link .  It was around that time that the arrived at the coast. On a long stretch of shoreline there stood a fisherman who had but one hand. The disciples looked around but saw no one else around that might be helping the man. They sat and watched, astounded that the fisherman had enough strength in only one useful arm to cast such a large net. The man kept one arm, the hindered one, behind his back in a sling, while he used the other to set his net against the tide. Each time a collection of light waves would come, the man would slowly walk around the waist-deep water to each of his anchors, unclipping and pulling in the net. It was midday and the sun was high. Because of this, most of the fish had gone away to deeper water and the man’s catch was slim. Still, he continued to slowly make his way around each to each anchor. The disciples watched for a long time and were stunned. They sat cross-legged in the warm sand resting, and among them no words were...

Week 2 Story: See the Moon, tibi

Image
("Tibi" fruit preserves, from  stock )  See the Moon, tibi  I am currently with my daughter Zoe on a stroll after she got upset because of a situation with her brother. Allow me to explain how we got here. My son Bo had gotten a package in the mail from his pen pal that lives up North. They had been trading jellies and jams for a few years now, all made from the local. This was a special package, however, because Bo's birthday was last week and he had asked his pen pal for a jar of tibi fruit preserves. If you didn't know, tibi fruit does not grow down here. You can only find them in the North, where the abundance of lucifer flies pollinate the low-lying plants. Not too many people have tasted tibi, but everyone has heard of it. With juices that run a deep, regal purple, the look of jelly made from tibi is astoundingly memorable. The first time I came across it, I was not impressed by the taste. But the look? The look I w...
